As it turns out……Paul who is considered to be a humble follower of Christ is actually a pretty proud and arrogant guy.
Once again he preaches from both sides of the mouth…….as every good liar does
27 WHERE IS BOASTING THEN? IT IS EXCLUDED. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
So according to him…….he should not be boasting.
But then take a look at what he says here:
2 Corinthians 11:10
10 As the truth of Christ is in me, NO MAN SHALL STOP ME OF BOASTING in the regions of Achaia.
Upon close examination……we start to see that he is boasting all the time:
1 Corinthians 14:18
18 I thank my God, I SPEAK WITH TONGUES MORE THAN YE ALL.
Take a look again:
2 Corinthians 11:22-29
22 Are they Hebrews? SO AM I. Are they Israelites? SO AM I. Are they the seed of Abraham? SO AM I.
23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I AM MORE; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.
24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.
25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;
26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?
Why exactly does Paul need to say all these things, if according to him boasting is excluded?
On the one hand, Paul says it is unwise to compare oneself with others:
2 Corinthians 10:12
12 For WE DARE NOT CLASS OURSELVES OR COMPARE OURSELVES WITH THOSE WHO COMMEND THEMSELVES. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
On the other hand, he was always comparing himself with the more seasoned disciples:
2 Corinthians 11:22-23
22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I.
23 Are they ministers of Christ?– I speak as a fool– I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often.
From here on it starts to get more interesting.
Paul got so proud and arrogant……that he started to claim that he was Jesus himself.
To be continued…….
