We asked the question……what is eternal life?
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
3 Now THIS IS ETERNAL LIFE: THAT THEY MAY KNOW YOU, THE ONLY TRUE GOD, AND JESUS CHRIST, WHOM YOU HAVE SENT.
According to Jesus……eternal life is knowing the one true God.
The obvious question comes in…….would you want to know this one true God that Jesus presents?
That’s a question every individual has to answer for themselves.
For now……let us assume that we want to get to know who this one true God is.
Let’s go from here:
21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because YOU HAVE HIDDEN THESE THINGS FROM THE WISE AND LEARNED, AND REVEALED THEM TO LITTLE CHILDREN. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. NO ONE KNOWS WHO THE SON IS EXCEPT THE FATHER, AND NO ONE KNOWS WHO THE FATHER IS EXCEPT THE SON AND THOSE TO WHOM THE SON CHOOSES T REVEAL HIM.”
23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “BLESSED ARE THE EYES THAT SEE WHAT YOU SEE.
24 FOR I TELL YOU THAT MANY PROPHETS AND KINGS WANTED TO SEE WHAT YOU SEE BUT DID NOT SEE IT, AND TO HEAR WHAT YOU HEAR AND DID NOT HEAR IT.”
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
27 He answered: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'”
28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE.”
There are a number of elements to this statement that need to be drawn out in order to gain a full understanding of what he is saying.
First off……he says that there are certain things that have been “hidden” from the wise and learned.
Let me rephrase……being wise and learned does not guarantee you knowledge of the existence of God…..in fact…. It puts you at a disadvantage because certain things are hidden.
He then says that these hidden things……..have been revealed to little children.
So the first principle is established…….if you want to know these things……its not about being wise and learned…….its about being like a little child.
What is it about little children that is appealing enough to want God to reveal these hidden things to them?
Can we too be like little children so that these things can be revealed to us?
We will delve into what it means to be a little child later on…..but for now, let’s move on to other elements of what he said.
Jesus says that all things have been committed to him by his father.
He says that noone knows who the father is except him; and those who he chooses to reveal the father to.
So Moses never knew the father. Neither did David, or Jacob e.t.c.
Noone knew who the father was except Jesus. Certainly not within the capacity which he presents.
According to Christ……there are certain things that his disciples could see that many kings and prophets wanted to see……but could not see……
There were certain things that the kings and prophets wanted to hear…..but could not hear.
But the disciples saw and heard them. And as a result…..they were blessed.
According to Jesus there are two things that will enable us to inherit this eternal life:
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
These two things are so deep that they open up a whole new world of things. Things that Jesus came to reveal to those that want to see and those that want to hear.
The value of eternal life may not be plain on the surface.
But maybe this will become clearer as we spend more time trying to identify exactly who this man’s father is……and why he feels that we should all get to know him.
To be continued……
