Jesus made quite a number of statements concerning rich people and his position towards them is fairly straight forward.
It is probably easier to understand where he is coming from seeing as we have explored how money is made and exactly what it means to be rich.
But let us examine a few more things that he says on the subject.
Luke 6:24……”WOE TO YOU WHO ARE RICH, FOR YOU HAVE RECEIVED YOUR CONSOLATION”
It appears as though being rich on earth serves as some form of consolation for missing out on the “real thing”….. whatever that might be.
He also says:
Luke 6:25……”WOE TO YOU THAT ARE FULL NOW, FOR YOU SHALL HUNGER.”
Jesus seems to be speaking of two different time zones……. Your condition in the present appears to be directly opposite to the position that you will find yourself in later.
What are the implications of this if he is telling the truth?
Not very good for rich people…… that’s for sure.
On the basis of this Jesus gives an instruction.
Luke 12:33-34……. “Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE WILL YOUR HEART BE ALSO.”
There seem to be two different types of treasure.
A treasure that can be stolen or destroyed……and a treasure that lasts forever.
Apparently…..we have to make a choice as to which treasure is worth having.
But it is important for you to know exactly where your treasure is…..because where your treasure is…….. that is where your heart will be also.
You cannot serve God and money.
A choice has to be made.
Luke 12:47-48……And that servant who knew his master’s will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall receive a severe beating. But he who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, shall receive a light beating. EVERY ONE TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, OF HIM WILL MUCH BE REQUIRED; AND OF HIM TO WHOM MEN COMMIT MUCH THEY WILL DEMAND THE MORE.
There are two categories of people in relation to this subject.
Please note that both get punished…… the only difference is the degree of punishment.
If you didn’t know the will of God in relation to money…….you would get a light beating.
But if you do know….yet choose to go the other way……. You will get a severe beating.
I guess it boils down to if you believe what Jesus is saying…….assuming that he speaks the truth…… this may be an issue that one needs to pay careful attention to.
If you have a lot……a lot is expected of you.
Its not enough to spend your money entirely on yourself with no regard for others around you…… we need to develop a certain consciousness to the things that matter.
Luke 6:20…….:”BLESSED ARE YOU WHO ARE POOR, FOR YOURS IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD”
If the kingdom of God is for the poor……. then we need to find out how we can become poor…… assuming the kingdom of God is something that we desire.
A lot of questions come to mind though.
How poor is poor?
Should we not work and have aspirations to live a better life?
What if I give up everything only to discover that it wasn’t worth it in the end? …..wouldn’t that mean I have wasted my life?
Let’s see if we can find a few answers to these questions.
To be continued……..
