Jesus used another parable to demonstrate this issue of repentance:
28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’
29 “‘I WILL NOT,’ HE ANSWERED, BUT LATER HE CHANGED HIS MIND AND WENT.
30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. HE ANSWERED, ‘I WILL, SIR,’ BUT HE DID NOT GO.
31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “I TELL YOU THE TRUTH, THE TAX COLLECTORS AND PROSTITUTES ARE ENTERING THE KINGDOM OF GOD AHEAD OF YOU.
32 FOR JOHN CAME TO YOU TO SHOW YOU THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND YOU DID NOT BELIEVE HIM, BUT THE TAX COLLECTORS AND PROSTITUTES DID. AND EVEN AFTER YOU SAW THIS, YOU DID NOT REPENT AND BELIEVE HIM.
At this current state of our lives…… it is important for us to do an evaluation.
An evaluation that consists of asking ourselves very serious questions…….about ourselves.
Questions about why we do what we do.
Questions about why we are the way we are.
An analysis of faults and unwarranted prejudices.
There is a reason why a prostitute will get to heaven ahead of Christians.
A prostitute upon hearing the words of Christ…… takes a decision to stop being a prostitute…..i.e she “repents”. She rejects a life of prostitution, because she has found something that is worth that sacrifice, and she never looks back.
This is completely different from the Christian concept of repentance……. which would be to carry on prostituting “occasionally”, because she cant help it…… and believing that because she has faith in Christ….she is covered by the blood of Jesus….. and thus every sin that she will ever commit is forgiven.
Both examples are on opposite ends of the spectrum, the latter being the more dangerous of the two.
It is one thing to “say what you are”…… it is another thing to “be” what you say you are.
Just because you say you are Christian i.e “christlike”……does not mean that you are anything like Christ.
You can realize what path you are on by spending some time taking a closer look at yourself.
You are the only one that truly understands the reasons why you knowingly do the wrong thing.
No amount of self deception should convince you that you cannot do anything to stop your sins.
You either want to, or you don’t.
You either want to work in the vineyard, or you don’t.
You can take a decision.
You can change your mind and actually work in the vineyard….. rather than just ‘say’ you will.
To be continued…….
