This is probably one of my favorite things that Jesus ever said…..because it has had such an impact on my life.
It is one of those statements that comes in conjunction with the saying….. “put your money where your mouth is”.
It is short….. and to the point.
16 “MY TEACHING IS NOT MY OWN. IT COMES FROM HIM WHO SENT ME.
The first point is established.
Jesus was sent by “someone”…… to teach us “something”.
He is not teaching something that he has conceived or developed of his own accord
He is essentially an errand boy delivering a message.
17 IF ANYONE CHOOSES TO DO GOD’S WILL, HE WILL FIND OUT WHETHER MY TEACHING COMES FROM GOD OR WHETHER I SPEAK ON MY OWN.
It might be worthwhile reading the above verse twice.
If you do what Jesus says…… you will find out if what he is saying is the truth.
It is something that can be tested.
For example…… if Jesus says that God wants to reveal himself to you….. and his only requirement is that you have a genuine desire to know him……
Ask God to reveal himself to you…… and see if he will.
It’s pretty straight forward.
Jesus said so many things….. most of which we have covered so far.
It all essentially sums up the will of God….. seeing as it was a message that Jesus was sent to deliver.
So I challenge you to put it to the test.
If Jesus says don’t worry about food and clothing….. because God provides these things.
Try not worrying about food and clothing….. and see whether or not God will provide it.
18 HE WHO SPEAKS ON HIS OWN DOES SO TO GAIN HONOUR FOR HIMSELF, BUT HE WHO WORKS FOR THE HONOUR OF THE ONE WHO SENT HIM IS A MAN OF TRUTH; THERE IS NOTHING FALSE ABOUT HIM.
Jesus was not trying to become a celebrity.
He was not trying to gain honour for himself.
On a number of occasions they even tried to make him a king…….but that was not why he came.
He came to deliver a message.
A message that you yourself can test to find out if it is the truth.
To be continued…..
