Let us take a look at a prayer that Jesus said concerning his disciples.
It is very important to situate the context of the scenario….. because it is specifically about his disciples.
It would be important to take what he says here into consideration…… assuming that we too want to be his disciples.
14 I HAVE GIVEN THEM YOUR WORD AND THE WORLD HAS HATED THEM, FOR THEY ARE NOT OF THE WORLD ANYMORE THAN I AM OF THE WORLD.
Pay attention to what he is saying here.
The reason why the world hates him and his disciples……. Is because he has given them the word of God.
Compare this with the reality of today…… where there are over 3 billion Christians.
3 billion Christians that love Jesus and the word of God.
How can this be?
The reason why so many people love the word of God…… is because it is not the word of God that they are preaching.
If it was……. A lot more people would hate it……rather than love it.
15 MY PRAYER IS NOT THAT YOU TAKE THEM OUT OF THE WORLD BUT THAT YOU PROTECT THEM FROM THE EVIL ONE.
Please note…… he is not praying that God should take us out of the world.
Even though the world is an evil place…… there must be a reason why we are here.
If you have been paying attention so far…… you would see that the whole purpose of you being in the world… is to be confronted with all kinds of pleasurable and distracting situations….. and for you to choose God and other people above everything else.
The evil one could come in the guise of anyone or anything…… not necessarily an evil monster that controls you and makes you do evil things.
Now this is where it gets deep.
16 THEY ARE NOT OF THE WORLD, EVEN AS I AM NOT OF IT.
17 SANCTIFY THEM BY THE TRUTH; YOUR WORD IS TRUTH.
18 AS YOU SENT ME INTO THE WORLD, I HAVE SENT THEM INTO THE WORLD.
19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
So even though as his diciples we are going to remain “in” the world…… we should not be “of” the world.
There needs to be a difference between us and everyone else.
We don’t do things….. the way the world does things.
We are sanctified by the truth.
We have been made holy…. By “believing” and “following” the message of Christ.
We have been sent……. TO BE DIFFERENT
20 “MY PRAYER IS NOT FOR THEM ALONE, I PRAY ALSO FOR THOSE WHO WILL BELIEVE IN ME THROUGH THEIR MESSAGE,
21 THAT ALL OF THEM MAY BE ONE, FATHER, JUST AS YOU ARE IN ME AND I AM IN YOU. MAY THEY ALSO BE IN US SO THAT THE WORLD MAY BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE SENT ME.
As previously established…… all of this implies to us who believe in his message.
Believing his message……. Will make you one with God.
But this is what is deep about it.
God is no longer known as God…… God….. is now known as Father.
This is where the reality of the message actually becomes significant.
There are many men who have acknowledged the existence of a “God”.
But no man ever claimed……..that God was his “Father”.
………And thus he presents us with a relationship.
Not a relationship that is fictional.
Not a relationship that is going to come into existence when you die.
It is a relationship that is “here and now”….. “in this world”.
You will be in him…… and he will be in you.
22 I HAVE GIVEN THEM THE GLORY THAT YOU GAVE ME, THAT THEY MAY BE ONE AS WE ARE ONE:
23 I IN THEM AND YOU IN ME. MAY THEY BE BROUGHT TO COMPLETE UNITY TO LET THE WORLD KNOW THAT YOU SENT ME AND HAVE LOVED THEM EVEN AS YOU HAVE LOVED ME.
There is no difference between us and Christ.
Christ is not some super human incapable of committing sin.
That would make him completely insignificant.
The only difference between Christ and the rest of mankind……. Is that “he had a relationship with God”.
But now….. he has given us his glory.
He has given us access to a relationship with God by telling us his will.
We can now talk to God openly and freely and the relationship is not creator to the created……
It is now “Father to Son”
24 “FATHER, I WANT THOSE YOU HAVE GIVEN ME TO BE WITH ME WHERE I AM, AND TO SEE MY GLORY, THE GLORY YOU HAVE GIVEN ME BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME BEFORE THE CREATION OF THE WORLD.
Jesus had a relationship with God before the world came into existence.
He came to the world…… and he revealed this to us.
He came to the world….. and he revealed intimate details about his relationship with his Father…… so that we too could be a part of it.
25 “RIGHTEOUS FATHER, THOUGH THE WORLD DOES NOT KNOW YOU, I KNOW YOU, AND THEY KNOW THAT YOU HAVE SENT ME.
26 I HAVE MADE YOU KNOWN TO THEM, AND WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE YOU KNOWN IN ORDER THAT THE LOVE YOU HAVE FOR ME MAY BE IN THEM AND THAT I MYSELF MAY BE IN THEM.”
The world did not know the Father before Jesus came.
They didn’t have a clue.
Jesus came and made his father known to us.
Yet the world still doesn’t have a clue….. and distorts his message presenting some super being that died for our sins.
But we will not be like the world.
We will hear the message……and understand it.
The message will become real in our lives.
The Father……will become real in our lives.
I tell you the truth because I know for a fact that this is not a lie.
It is a wasted life…… when a son never gets to meet his father.
Scrap that…..when a son never meets his father….. he doesn’t know what life is.
To be continued……
